The Gospel of John- Part 5: The Wedding at Cana - John 2v1-15// February 1st, 2026

Teaching overview

Riley Taylor continued in his sermon  through the  Gospel of John by teaching on Jesus’s first sign—turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana—and explaining that John’s purpose is to lead people to believe in and truly know Jesus. He showed how this miracle reveals Jesus as one who cares about real needs, transforms shame into honor, brings new life in place of old religious systems, and reveals himself as the true bridegroom. Riley encouraged the church not to focus on the miracle itself, but to let the sign lead them into deeper trust, joy, and relationship with Jesus.

Our prayer for your Community

Jesus, we bring our real needs to you this week, trusting that you see us and care deeply about every part of our lives. Help us look beyond the signs to know you more fully, and to experience the joy, grace, and new life you offer as our true bridegroom.

Group questions and further meditations:

  1. Bringing Our Needs to Jesus

    Meditation:

The story at Cana reminds us that Jesus cares about ordinary, practical needs—not just spiritual ones. Like Mary, we are invited to bring what feels small, embarrassing, or unresolved to Jesus and trust him with the outcome.

    Questions:

What need in your life are you tempted to handle on your own instead of bringing to Jesus?

What might it look like to trust Jesus with that situation this week?

2. From Shame to Honor

Meditation:

Jesus quietly turns a moment of potential shame into unexpected honor, without drawing attention to himself. This reveals a Savior who covers our shame and restores dignity rather than exposing our failures.

Questions:

Where have you experienced shame or fear of being “found out” in your life?

How does knowing that Jesus covers shame change the way you bring those areas to him?

3. New Wine, New Life

Meditation:

By filling old purification jars with new wine, Jesus shows that he brings something entirely new—a deeper joy and inner transformation, not just outward rule-keeping. Life with Jesus is meant to be renewed from the inside out.

Questions:

In what ways might you be relying on old patterns, habits, or efforts to find spiritual fulfillment?

What would it look like to receive the “new wine” Jesus wants to pour into your life right now?
