Seeking Wisdom. James 1v2-8 // June 8th, 2025

Teaching overview

This Sunday, June 8th, Pastor Nick Taylor preached on James 1:2-8, emphasizing that true wisdom is rooted in the generous and trustworthy character of God. He encouraged the church to seek wisdom amid trials by remaining steadfast and single-minded in faith, trusting that God gives generously to those who ask. Nick reminded the congregation that joy and hope in hardship are possible when we rely on God’s unchanging nature.

Our prayer for your Community

“Lord, give us Your wisdom to walk through trials with joy and steadfast faith. Help us to trust fully in Your generous and unchanging character, knowing You are always near and ready to guide us.”

Group questions

  1. What part of Sunday’s message convicted, encouraged, or surprised you? (Seek)

Take time to revisit your notes or reflect on what you heard during the teaching. Consider where God might have been drawing your attention—not just what you thought, but what God might have been saying. A helpful practice is to spend a few quiet moments in Lectio Divina—slowly reading the passage of Scripture again, listening for a word or phrase that stands out, meditating on it, and letting it speak to your heart. Before speaking your own thoughts, let the Word speak first and ask that God's presence would join you.

  2. What perspective do I need to change or adjust to come under the authority of scripture?  What action does the text call me to do in light of this perspective? (Practice)

Hearing the word is just the beginning—following Jesus means living in obedience to it. The Spirit often prompts us toward simple obedience, repentance, or renewed action. This is not about being perfect, but about being faithful. What small step could you take this week to practice what was preached?

  3. How can we as a group support you in living out what we’ve discussed this week? (Mission)

Discipleship is not only about inward formation but also outward compassion, and we want to walk that journey together as a community. As we pray for one another and seek Jesus together, our hearts are shaped toward His mission to renew all things. Our group isn’t just for us, but a place where we practice loving each other and live out the Kingdom of God.

For further meditation through the rest of your week…

Meditation 1: Joy in Trails
“Count it all joy…”
Take a moment today to reflect on a recent or ongoing trial in your life. Ask God to show you how He might be using it to grow your faith and strengthen your character. What would it look like to face this trial not with fear or frustration, but with quiet joy, trusting that God is at work in you?

Meditation 2: Asking for Wisdom
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God…”
Spend time in prayer asking God for wisdom in a specific area where you feel uncertain or overwhelmed. As you pray, remember that God gives generously and without finding fault—come to Him with confidence and trust in His character.

Meditation 3: Wholehearted Faith
“The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea…”
Reflect on where your heart may feel divided—torn between trusting God and chasing worldly security or approval. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you become single-minded in your devotion, letting go of distractions and renewing your focus on God’s voice and direction.
