The Gospel of John- Part 18: Eat My Flesh, Drink My Blood | John 6:52-71// May 24, 2026
Teaching overview
On Sunday, Riley continued our study through John 6v25-59, where Jesus challenges the crowd to recognize that their deepest need is not physical food, but spiritual satisfaction that only He can provide. Declaring Himself the “bread of life,” Jesus invites people to stop chasing temporary things and instead come to Him for lasting fulfillment and eternal life. The sermon concludes by emphasizing that true faith means abiding in Jesus—making Him the center of our lives and allowing His presence to shape and sustain us daily.
Our prayer for the Community
Jesus, we confess that your words can sometimes challenge and confront us, yet we believe you alone have the words of eternal life. Help us not to walk away when following you feels difficult, but to trust you more deeply and be transformed by your truth. As we remember your sacrifice this week, draw us into closer communion with you and shape us to become more like you together. Amen.
Group questions and further meditations:
When Jesus Offends Our Preferences
Meditation:
Jesus’s words in John 6 challenged the crowd because they confronted their assumptions, desires, and expectations. Often, God’s word exposes areas where we want comfort, control, or affirmation more than transformation.
Discussion Questions:
What part of following Jesus has been most challenging or uncomfortable for you recently?
How do you usually respond when Scripture confronts your values, habits, or worldview?
Why do you think offense can sometimes become an invitation to growth rather than something to avoid?
Choosing to Stay with Jesus
Meditation:
Many people walked away from Jesus after this teaching, but Peter stayed because he recognized that only Jesus had “the words of eternal life.” Faith is not always about fully understanding everything, but about trusting Jesus even in difficulty.
Discussion Questions:
Have you ever experienced a season where following Jesus felt confusing or difficult?
What helps you continue trusting Jesus when you do not fully understand what he is doing?
3. Communion as Remembrance and Relationship
Meditation:
Communion is more than a religious ritual; it is a reminder of Jesus’s sacrifice and an expression of ongoing relationship with him. Just as we physically eat and drink, we are invited to continually receive and abide in Christ.
Discussion Questions:
What does communion personally remind you of about Jesus and your relationship with him?
In what ways can remembering Jesus regularly keep us from spiritual drift?
How can we more intentionally “abide” in Jesus throughout our everyday lives this week?
