The Gospel of John- Part 3: Defined By What We Point To - John 1v14-34// January 18th, 2026

Teaching overview

This week, one of Mountlake Church' elders, Tucker Tillman, taught from John 1:19–34, emphasizing that the goal of the church’s journey through the Gospel of John is not self-improvement but truly knowing Jesus for who he is. Through the example of John the Baptist, Tucker highlighted that our identity is revealed by what our lives point to, calling the church to humility and to consistently direct attention to Christ.

Our prayer for your Community

Jesus, help us this week to live lives that clearly point to you as the Lamb of God who takes away our sin. Shape our hearts with humility, that in all we do we would make room for you to be seen, trusted, and followed.

Group questions and further meditations:

  1. What Is My Life Pointing To?

    Meditation:

John the Baptist did not define himself by a title but by his purpose—to point people to Jesus. In the same way, our true identity is revealed not by what we claim, but by what our lives consistently direct attention toward.

    Question:

If someone observed your week—your time, conversations, and priorities—what would they say your life is pointing to?

2. The Practice of Humility

Meditation:

John willingly stepped back so that Jesus could be seen, declaring himself unworthy even of the lowest task. In God’s kingdom, humility is not weakness but the pathway to true greatness and freedom.

Question:

Where might Jesus be inviting you to “lower yourself” this week—not to earn love, but to respond to the love you’ve already received? What is Jesus doing, and how can I be a part of what Jesus is doing?

3. Beholding the Lamb

Meditation:

John’s declaration, “Behold, the Lamb of God,” centers everything on who Jesus is and what he came to do—take away sin and restore our relationship with God. Transformation begins not with striving, but with clearly seeing and trusting Jesus.

Question:

What would it look like for you to more intentionally behold Jesus this week, and how might that change the way you respond to sin, stress, or uncertainty? How can I submit the Jesus?
