The Gospel of John- Part2: In The Beginning - John 1v1-4// January 11th, 2026
Teaching overview
This week, Derek Sandbeck did a deep dive in the text “In the beginning” in John chapter 1 and how it is an “arche” and its origins in Genesis and the account of creation.
Our prayer for your Community
Jesus, you spoke light into the darkness and brought life where there was nothing. As we open Your Word tonight, help us see you more clearly—as our Creator, our Light, and our Savior. Shine Your light of salvation into our hearts, and into the places that feel formless or unfinished. Make us new by the power of Your Word and Your Spirit.
Group questions and further meditations:
Jesus Creates Life Where There Is Emptiness
Meditation:
In Genesis, God does not avoid the formless and void—He enters it. In John, we learn that Jesus has always been doing this work. He creates life where there is none and meaning where there is emptiness.
Questions:
Where in your life do you feel unfinished, uncertain, or empty right now? What would it look like to trust Jesus as Creator in that place instead of trying to fix it yourself? How can the group pray for one another in these areas?
2. The Light of Christ Is Stronger Than Any Darkness
Meditation:
Darkness is real, but it is never ultimate. From the very beginning, God’s light interrupts darkness—and in Jesus, that light becomes personal, present, and saving.
Questions:
What kinds of darkness—fear, shame, grief, confusion—are hardest for people to bring into the light? How has Jesus’ light overcome darkness in your life before? What practices help you stay oriented toward the light when life feels heavy?
3. New Creation Is Ongoing Work
Meditation:
Jesus does not only create once—He continues to create. New creation is not just a moment of salvation but a lifelong process of renewal, healing, and transformation.
Questions:
Where do you see God making something new in your life right now? What is one area where you sense Jesus inviting you to trust His renewing work? How can the group be a place that reflects God’s light and new creation to others?
