The Gospel of John- Part 12: A Healing at Bethesda | John 5:1-16// March 22nd, 2026
Teaching overview
In John 5:1–15, Jesus heals a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years, showing that God’s grace is not earned or based on effort, but freely given to those who cannot help themselves. The story contrasts grace with empty religion and man made rules to try to understand and submit to God, as Jesus prioritizes compassion and transformation over rule-keeping. Ultimately, it reveals that while Jesus meets our immediate needs, He calls us to respond by embracing deeper spiritual change.
Our prayer for your Community
Jesus, we come to You not striving to earn Your grace, but simply to receive it, trusting that You meet us right where we are. As we pray, would You not only meet our needs but transform our hearts, helping us walk in obedience and respond fully to the grace You’ve given us. In Jesus’ name, Amen
Group questions and further meditations:
Receiving Grace, Not Earning It
Meditation:
Jesus moved toward a man who had nothing to offer and no way to fix himself—reminding us that grace meets us in our helplessness, not our effort.
Question:
Where in your life are you still trying to earn God’s help instead of receiving His grace?
Grace Over Religious Routine
Meditation:
The religious leaders missed the miracle because they were focused on rule-keeping instead of compassion, showing how easy it is to prioritize form over heart.
Question:
Are there ways you might be valuing spiritual habits or rules over loving people well?
3. Responding to Deeper Healing
Meditation:
Jesus didn’t just heal the man physically—He invited him into a transformed life, pointing to a deeper healing beyond the surface.
Question:
What deeper work might Jesus be inviting you into right now, and how will you respond?
