The Gospel of John- Part 16: Jesus Walks on the Water | John 6:14-24// May 10, 2026

Teaching overview

In John 6:14–24, both the crowds and the disciples were close to Jesus but still misunderstood who he truly was. Through powerful echoes of the Exodus story—bread in the wilderness, crossing the water, and Jesus declaring “I am”—the passage reveals that Jesus is Yahweh, the same God who delivered Israel and is present with his people today. Pastor Riley challenged listeners to move beyond simply wanting what Jesus can provide and instead become willing to welcome his presence into their lives, trusting him in the middle of fear and struggle.

Our prayer for the Community

Jesus, we come before You asking that You would soften our hearts and help us truly recognize who You are. Teach us to desire Your presence more than just what You can provide, and help us become willing to trust You in every area of our lives. In the middle of fear, frustration, and uncertainty, remind us that You are near and that Your authority is greater than anything we face. As we walk through this week, help us welcome You into the ‘boat’ of our lives and rest in Your words: ‘Do not be afraid.’ Amen.

Group questions and further meditations:

  1. Wanting Jesus, Not Just His Help

    Meditation:

The crowds followed Jesus because of the bread, but the disciples eventually learned that the greatest gift was Jesus himself. It’s possible to seek God mainly for what He can do for us instead of desiring a relationship with Him.

    Question:

In this season of life, am I more focused on what I want from Jesus or on simply being with Him? What reveals that in my daily life?

  2. Jesus Meets Us in the Middle of the Storm

Meditation:
Jesus came to the disciples while they were struggling against the wind and afraid in the darkness. He did not wait for them to reach safety before revealing Himself to them.

Question:
Where in my life do I currently feel overwhelmed, fearful, or stuck? What would it look like for me to trust that Jesus is present with me in the middle of it?

3. A Willing Heart

Meditation:
The sermon emphasized the disciples becoming “willing” to receive Jesus into the boat. God’s invitation is not forced—He desires hearts that are open and responsive to Him.

Question:
Is there an area of my life where I have been resistant or unwilling to fully surrender to Jesus? What step of openness or obedience might God be inviting me to take this week?
