The Gospel of John – Part 23: The Way, the Truth, and the Life | John 14:1–14 // October 18th, 2026

Teaching overview

This past Sunday, Derek Sandbeck explored Jesus’ words of comfort to His disciples in John 14 as they faced uncertainty about His departure. Jesus reminded them that He is the way, the truth, and the life, promising that through Him they could experience a restored relationship with God and find peace in His presence. Derek challenged the church to trust Jesus in the midst of troubled hearts, continue His work in a broken world, and pray boldly in His name, confident that God is faithful and that His answers ultimately bring glory to the Father.

Our prayer for the Community

Jesus, help us to trust You when our hearts are troubled and the future feels uncertain. Remind us that You are the way to the Father and that our greatest hope is found in Your presence. Give us courage to continue Your work, bringing Your love and hope to the broken people around us. Teach us to pray boldly in Your name, trusting Your faithfulness and seeking Your glory above our own. Amen.

Group questions and further meditations:

  1. Trust Jesus in the Midst of Uncertainty

    Discussion Questions:

Jesus tells His disciples, "Do not let your hearts be troubled" (John 14:1). What circumstances in your life right now are making it difficult to trust God? How do you typically respond when you feel uncertain about the future?

Jesus promises His disciples a place in the Father's presence. How does knowing that your ultimate hope is being with Jesus change the way you approach the worries and challenges of everyday life?

  2. Continue the Work of Jesus

    Discussion Questions:

Jesus says that whoever believes in Him will do the works He has been doing, and even greater things (John 14:12). What do you think Jesus means by "greater works"? What might that look like in our lives today?

Our church's mission is to see broken people renewed in Jesus. Who in your life might need to experience the hope and love of Jesus right now? What might be holding you back from reaching out to them?

  3. Pray Boldly in Jesus' Name

    Discussion Questions:

What does it mean to pray in Jesus' name rather than simply asking God for what we want? How might our prayers change if our primary desire was to glorify God rather than achieve a particular outcome?

Jesus promises, "I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son" (John 14:13). If you truly believed God would answer your prayers, what would you be praying for that you aren't praying for today?
